The vagus nerve is the longest cranial nerve which wanders like a vagabond throughout the internal organs. New research is also talking about the probability of the vagus nerve as the answer to treating chronic inflammation.

If you have a healthy vagus nerve, you will have a greater opportunity of recovering quickly from injury, illness or stress. This nerve is part of the parasympathetic nervous system which helps you to rest and digest. It’s opposite, the sympathetic nervous system, can send you into fight or flight reactions. A balance between the two systems is the solution to healthy living in all senses.
Activating a happy vagus
When you breathe consciously, you activate your vagus nerve and in so doing rejuvenate your body and equilibrate your mind. These are key ingredients to achieving your daily tasks, your life’ purpose and living a meaningful life.
Vagus Activation Exercise
1. Keep your body straight and relaxed in a standing, seated or lying down position.
2. Breathe in slowly through your nose. Nasal breathing is calming while mouth breathing energises.
3. Expand your lungs out and down. Keep the shoulders relaxed and down.
4. Breathe out slowly while making the sound “aaaaaa”.
